VOLHYNIA

Volhynia is found in northwestern Ukraine, between Podillia and Polissia. The Volyn region marks the transition between the lowland marshes of Polissia into the upland plateau of Podillia, creating a picturesque landscape of waterways, depressions, valleys, mountains and mesas. The population largely involved in agriculture, resulting in a predominantly rural lifestyle.

Costuming of Volhynia has retained many older attributes and features a noticeable Polish influence. Female costuming consists of a wrapped head piece, corset-like coat and flowing skirt. Male costuming can be quite diverse, and most notably includes a long, sweeping jacket or overcoat. Choreography is typically very light, fun and good humoured. Extensive use of a variety of polka steps is common, creating a very partner-oriented style of dance.
