HUTSUL’SHCHYNA

Located in the Carpathian Mountains of far western Ukraine, the Hutsul people have likely retained more of their customs than any other sub-ethnic group within the country. For this reason, Hutsul choreography is among the most recognizable forms of regional Ukrainian dance.

Costuming from the Hutsul region is rich in detail, and layered, reflecting the variable climate of a mountain region. Hutsul clothing is notably fitted and has plenty of embroidery that is much wider and quite variable in colour when compared to other regions of Ukraine. Leather accents often adorn vests, belts, jackets and other forms of clothing. Choregraphy incorporates narrow, high stepping movements, and plenty of circular formations.
